It is officially located on Round House Road, named for the round house or 120-degree turntable used to turn trains so they could enter the storage depot. The museum is unmistakable from those traveling on Highway 87. You can exit the highway at East Germann Road, go south on Hamilton Street, burn on Ryan Road and get onto Roundhouse Road.
The Arizona Railway Museum has more than a museum full of trains. It has a restoration shop that can repair and restore new trains. Furthermore, the museum has a family entertainment area and interactive train play area where kids can ride a small train themselves. The 20-acre site also has an art gallery and interpretive exhibits. You could event rent meeting rooms there or attend lessons on Arizona’s history. You could see the dispatcher stations rebuilt inside the museum.
The museum was founded in 1983. It has been added to the National Register of Historic Places thanks to its classic locomotives and supporting equipment like crane and tool cars. Entry to the museum is often free, and they regularly hold Open Houses where you can get close or climb around inside some of the railroad cars.
Those visiting the museum can also jump over to Tumbleweed Park. This is one of the largest parks in Chandler. Let the kids play at the Playtopia playground or visit the Tumbleweed Recreation Center. You could even park at the Chandler Park and Ride in Tumbleweed Park, though that is a long walk to the Arizona Railway Museum.
Note that the Arizona Railway Museum is not the operator of the Desert Breeze Railroad. That is located at the Desert Breeze Park next to Desert Breeze Lake. However, the Desert Breeze Railroad is located in suburban Chandler. They’re about a fifteen-minute drive from each other.
