Huhugam Heritage Center
The Gila River Indian Community is a moderately sized Native American reservation on the south side of the Phoenix metro area. It straddles Maricopa and Pinal counties. The Huhugam Heritage Center is a cultural center for the Gila River Indian community. That is made up of two tribes, the Akimel O’otham (the Pima) and the Pee Posh tribes (the Maricopa). The tribes were given the reservation in the 1860s and received legal status in the 1930s. The cultural center itself was built in 2003.
The Huhugam Heritage Center is much more than a museum presenting artifacts for the two-thousand-year history of the trip in the area. For example, they have an artist working in the building at any given time, though they rotate the artists out every three months. Their artist gallery alone is around six thousand square feet. They also have a veteran’s reading room dedicated to the local people who served in the military.
The museum hosts everything from jewelry carved from bone to a collection of several hundred handmade baskets. Items made by local artists are occasionally available for purchase. Special shows are held periodically, as well.
The Huhugam Heritage Center is located on South Maricopa Road in Chandler, Arizona. It is a short distance north of the South Maricopa Road intersection with Highway 347. It is several miles south of the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. It is easily reached by taking Maricopa Freeway / Highway 10 south from Loop 202.
The Huhugam Heritage Center is a great place to visit along with the nearby Rawhide Western Town and Event Center or the Whirlwind Gold Club. The facility is a ten to fifteen-minute drive south of the Gila River Casino at Lone Butte. Or take Highway 87 to West Queen Creek to reach it after visiting the Arizona Railway Museum.
